Brooks

3D scanning | 3D Modeling | Material asset library | rendering

Brooks Sports contacted Kevin Carr (ScanMatter Studios Inc) to explore the option of moving their physical-based shoe samples to the digital realm. Every color or material change on a physical shoe sample had to be ordered from the manufacturer which was not only costly, but had a long lead time to see the results. Creating a digital sample would allow the designers to see their changes in near real-time at a fraction of the cost. Now the question came, how do we create a digital sample that looks identical to the physical product? The Solution: 3D scanning. This would only require Brooks Sports to make one physical sample of each model in the season line up. Using 3D3 Solutions’ HDI Advance 3D Scanning System, we were able to capture the rich details needed to convey the design intent in a digital format. From there I utilized Modo to build the rest of the visualization pipeline; Re-topology, textureing, lighting and rendering. In the end, the client was impressed with the time and cost savings as a result of the new process.

“ Kevin (Scanmatter) was able to create truly convincing 3D virtual models of our concept footwear that ultimately reduced the amount of physical samples we needed to construct. We at Brooks, have high standards for our 3D assets and Kevin comes through every time. He is a true professional and listens to the clients’ needs and provides recommendations and solutions when necessary.”

Akita Tactical

industrial Design | CNC machining

Over three years ago I started off on a venture with one of my Martial Arts instructors, Mark “Crafty Dog” Denny of the Dog Brothers. We sought out to design and fabricate Tactical fighting knives complimentary to Mark’s knife methodologies. The Akita and Shiba knives became the official blade of the Jordanian special forces. With having to fill a very large order we outsourced the fabrication to Schenk knives. With that contract, we purchased a CNC machine so I could learn and eventually take over the production process. Learning the CNC process has dramatically changed how I design. This was one of the best experiences I’ve had to help iterate and expand my design capabilities.
